It’s been really busy at work and at home these past couple of days, so I haven’t had a chance to post anything… but, as of tomorrow, I should have an actual Sailbird aluminum centerboard to play with! The plan is to build a centerboard trunk and lay a flush cockpit sole (floor) over it, so that the bottom of the cockpit will be completely flat. There will be 4 to 6 watertight compartments underneath this floor for storage and flotation. The bow and stern will be sealed off a bit more permanently than with the current hatches, and I think we’ll put an anchor locker up front, although I’m not yet totally sure about that. I’m going to be spending some quality time researching foam core composite panel construction, possibly vacuum bagged and resin infused, ala’ Derek Kelsall and his KSS composite panel system, best explained here – http://www.kelsall.com/methods.html
Strangely, I don’t feel bad at all about scrapping a lot of the fiberglass work I’ve already done on Clarity… it’s been a learning experience, and we’ll have a better, safer boat when we’re done.
